Michael D. "Matt" Matthews, Jr. Phoenix Tower Home > Our Team > Michael D. “Matt” Matthews, Jr. Matt Matthews focuses his practice on commercial litigation and international arbitration. He has experience representing clients in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels in cases involving energy, construction, financial services, real estate, insurance and other complex business disputes.
Before joining Edison, McDowell & Hetherington LLP, Matt served as a law clerk to the Honorable Thad Heartfield, then-Chief United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas. Matt also worked as Associate General Counsel for a global industrial manufacturer, representing the company in litigation and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts. Matt’s experiences in the federal court system and in private enterprise give him insight and skills that shape his approach to clients' cases.
As a continuation of his commitment to public service, Matt also maintains an active pro bono practice at EMH. In law school, as a member of The University of Texas Law Immigration Clinic, Matt helped win asylum in the United States for a survivor of human rights abuses that occurred in Guatemala in the 1980s. Matt also worked as a legislative aide to Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives James E. “Pete” Laney in the 75th and 76th sessions of the Texas Legislature.
Outside the office, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and son, traveling, reading and listening to live music.

Represented BAE Systems, a leading global defense, security and aerospace company, in an arbitration with a subcontractor over a U.S. Army contract, resulting in a favorable award following a hearing on the merits.

Represents Calpine Corporation in a personal injury case in Texas that resulted in a summary judgment victory for his client (currently on appeal).
Represents Service Corporation International, the world’s largest funeral company, in antitrust litigation that resulted in a motion-to-dismiss victory for his client (currently on appeal to the Fifth Circuit).
Represents American General Life Insurance Company in several financial services cases across the country.
Represented Time Insurance Company in a commercial dispute with a Texas health-care provider, obtaining a favorable settlement for his client.
Represented PHL Variable Life Insurance Company in stranger-owned/originated life insurance litigation in Florida that resulted in a favorable settlement.
